Is this not an amazing picture?
Generally called The Arnolfini Marriage (by Van Eyck) and thought to be a picture of the marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami; around 1434. However, today I learned that the new theory is it’s some sort of wish picture, asking for the blessing of children. Because the couple pictured never actually had children – tres sad no?

Such is this melancholic yearning from which are thankfully both spared ;)
yers, not my particular wish. Perhaps I should commission a painting depicting something for which I do yearn - kittens for Ping for instance!
