First you get a sort of bulby knob. It's a lovely red, pomegranate red, funnily enough. Then the crepe-paper petals push through. I suspect, but don't know for sure, those yellow stamens become the ruby jewels that make the pomegranate worth the effort. Then, after the petals fall, looking a little like the leftovers from a Hindu wedding, the star appears. And then slowly, o so very slowly, behind the star, the swelling that will one day be a pomegranate, plumps out, bulges, grows.
It's all a bit sexy really, which freaks me out a bit I must say.

Is this real?
Oh, what a dream.
O, she's real, and I want a dress that's made of the petals.
Beautiful and utterly fascinating!
Lee - fingers are crossed they last long enough to grow into proper fruits! We are watching closely.
Gorgeous! And so well named.
E, not particularly original, the name, I'm sure, but it suits :)
