This is a Doona...

... since Zoomie was wondering. Also known as a duvet or down quilt.

This was the first time I heard the word, too, but I guessed what it was from your context. And it sounds like "down." Kinda.

is it also called a 'comforter'?? or is that a baby's dummy? i'm never sure what to call them here in the excited states. hmmmm.

Cookie (may I say clever cookie?) - it's also known as a continental quilt. Doona is a brand name so my mum would be horrified - a bit like calling a pen a biro!
CAW, methinks a comforter is more like one of those satin quilts you see in movies - but I could be wrong.

Comforter covers it. But you have to specify that it's a down comforter, otherwise it could be made of something else.

Aha, I'm now educated on doonas! Bet you're using lots of (brand name) Kleenex, too. Poor you!

It's all so complicated I think I'm coming over all dizzy ;)
Zoomie, yes indeed, actual Kleenex so it would be ok to say kleenex only I don't, I call 'em tissues! (mum won on that point).
