CAW tells me ...

... that north-American folk equate eating lamb with eating real veal (as in aborted calf or crate raised calf). That there’s a bit of a cruelty taboo about eating lambies – is this true?

Oh why do I let you drag me down these paths?!?!

Veal and lamb are both eaten in these parts. If one eats meat, then there are probably significantly fewer qualms about eating lamb than eating veal. Veal is often equated with abysmal conditions prior to slaughter.

As for "aborted calf" I had never even heard the term before and it seals my aversion to veal.

As my Dad used to say when confronted with the unpleasant: "What's the chill factor?"

I'd much rather discuss biscuits vs. cookies!!!

Sorry Lee, but facts are real veal is aborted calf, the leftovers from the dairy industry - horrific but true. The only other way to get veal-like white meat is the vile practice of locking bebe cows in the dark and feeding them nothing but skim milk. This, of course, is why Mr Brown & I only eat grass-raised beef - you do not want to get me started on feedlot/grain fed beef, trust me.
I like lamb because I know it's made of bebe sheep that have skipped and played in the grass and sun - here at least.
That said, I don't think we've eaten meat all week, Mr Brown is in a sulk because he's just realised the lasagna I’m cooking tonight is vegetarian. Poor wee carnivore.

I don't eat veal for the reasons above. Lamb, well, just in case. Or lobster.

Oh, E, you're missing out Lamb and Lobster -wise. We always pop a lobster in the freezer before we pop him in the pot - I choose to believe he goes to sleep and then dies, the whole boiliing alive thing is a bit too brutal, even for me!

While I am a carnivore, I refuse to eat either veal or goose-liver pate. I agree with Pink Granite/Lee - Veal is generally viewed as more objectionable than lamb, but there are quite a few people who won't eat lamb. To be honest, unless it is free range, pretty much every animal has a miserable life up until it is slaughtered (and even free-range can be horrible squeezed in and uncared for).

Going to go eat some carrots now.

Willsie, agreed, free range and chemical free is the way to go. Expensive yes but the guilt factor is reduced and you don't buy so much, which has to be good for the pipes!

I've talked to people who will eat neither (never heard of the aborted calves but wow, now I'm _sure_ I'll never eat veal!) but, for myself, I don't eat veal because of the sad treatment of the calves and I will eat lamb because at least they had a "lamb's life" until slaughtered. Like you, I'm trying to stick only to grass-raised animals - better for our health as well as our humanity.
