The perils of elderly houses ...

... the Brown-Mouse house has been sans intertubes for most of the afternoon. We put this down to the rain, which has been falling pretty heavily and steadily last night and all of today. That and the 90-odd% humidity does "something" to the wiring under the house, the phone drops out - taking with it the interweb. Turning on the under-floor fans helps a bit - which is why I'm able to type this now.
Mr Brown proposes getting some bloke in to meddle with the cabling, something that's probably not been done for many a long year.

Sounds like a good idea, having bought 3 homes, rewired two, and noticed the 2nd day after the new owner moved into the one we DIDN'T do .. that an electrical van was out front.

Because it DID need doing. Scary.

It's not cheap, but man, it's better than being dead.

You have under-floor fans?? What are those?

H&B - the wiring is fine, we've had that checked, it's the phone cables that are the problem - not likely to kill us but it can be very irritating indeed.
E - we have solar run (electric backup for rainy days) fans under the house, it moves the air about reducing damp (and, therefore mould), discouraging termites and keeping it "fresh" under the house. There's no cross ventilation you see, because we are a duplex and the wall down the middle stops that. It’s pretty cool, I rather like hearing them start up, vroooooooommmmmm, when the sun hits the panel.
