... remember the mystery insect?
Well, this lovely person over at flickr has helped solve the mystery, apparently the little hitchhiker is just a gnat "a fly of family Ceratopogonidae". And apparently they are known "to take in certain chemicals (like cantharidine) from other insects".
So there you go, it's a cantharidine thief!
What a wonderful place the magical, mystical, wibbly interweb is.

old retired entomologists are too slow..
When I was a little girl, the nuns would tell me that when I got to heaven, I would know everything. That promise kept me obedient for a long, long time. I could have answered your gnat question from heaven!
S, they are indeed, mostly because they spend all their time writing letters to the fucking Minister - I'm a bit grumpy with the retired atm!
Zoomie, hmmmm, I think those nuns may have been fibbing!
Wow, that's hectic (just looked at the pics now). I've never seen anything like it! Glad you've solved the mystery of the little parasitic bugger...
Sue, it's pretty freaky eh? I love the interweb!
That's kinda cute, the extra bug.
I went and looked at the Flickr page you recommended... blimey, there are some awesome bug pictures... the squeamish may have to pass on checking it out ;o)
