... Last Night in Twisted River by John Irving.
Bought at Sydney Airport on 23 December 2009, I needed something to read on the plane and John Irving has yet to let me down. I've been reading his books since the early 1980's I believe, after I saw the movie of The World According to Garp. I knew a movie that funny had to have a better book behind it, and it did.
Last Night is not his best work, some of it was a bit, meh, almost as if he wasn't really trying. But that said, it was a gripping, can't put it down book with the usual tragedy and laugh out loud moments. Lucky for me the laugh out loud bits didn't happen on the plane, that's always problematic.
Which brings us to the first book purchases of 2010 ... The Other Wind and The Left Hand of Darkness, both by the wonderful Ursula K Le Guin.
I'm not especially a fan of the science fiction genre, but I don't snootily refuse to read it either. Ms Le Guin's novels and short stories are intelligent and entertaining. You can't really ask for more in your light summer reading.
(I'm reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin at the moment and finding it a bit of a slog, not sure why, it's probably just one of those "must be in the mood" books as it's quite a good story - hence my need for a but of a SciFi break.)

You know, my neighbor lives in Vermont half the year, and John Irving is her neighbor. She knows him well.
