Bird's Nest Ferns ....

.... Asplenium australasicum, Spleenworts (hehee, spleenworts).
There are three in the Brown-Mouse long, thin garden.
One, was here when we got here, and we bought it a little friend, so then there were two.
Then I saw a very sad little one looking sick and despondent at some ghastly gigantor garden centre. We brought it home where it thrives alongside it's big sisters. Come Spring, new fronds slowly poke through the litter that settles in the middle, the nesty bit.
The new fronds have a bit of rusty-brown fuzz, which falls away as the frond flattens out. I suspect it plays a role in keeping the curled up bits from sticking to each other, but I've no idea really.
They push up and out, pressing the older fronds out of the way.
A new ring of fresh green fronds, a frond rosette, forms.
Last year's ring, quite tall, makes room.
A ring of fronds lasts a couple of seasons, then dies away, only partly covered by it's younger sister ring.
