Spice Temple, the sequel ...

This was going to be a comment in the post below but I came over all verbose ...
Thanks for popping by David but I get the feeling you haven’t really understood my gripe. And that may be my fault in part, since I didn’t want to go into long, tedious detail about the lack of service. But since you have popped by, let me outline why we were so unhappy last night.
We arrive, we are offered drinks menus and then we wait, and wait until an order is taken. We wait another 20 minutes until the drinks actually arrive.
We’d ordered a carafe of Pig, as I mentioned, and since the carafe was not left on the table, and we were not able to top up our own glasses, I’d expected some discrete observation on the part of the wait staff, some regular topping up. But no, we had to ask for our glasses to be refreshed, each time. In the end, because of the length of time between top ups our last glass was pretty much melted ice.
One of the party would have liked a third beer, one of the party would have liked a glass of wine. At no stage during the evening were we ever asked if we would like to order any other drinks. To get his second beer a little waiter tackling had to be employed.
Like I said, the food really was excellent, but the wait for our last course, the chicken was well over ½ an hour after we’d polished up the other dishes, and all the rice. There was no apology, no explanation, and no offer “can we get you another serving of rice?” Either the course was forgotten, in which case a “sorry” would have been nice, or the dish in question takes a long time to prepare, in which case a warning from the waiter or on the menu would have been useful.
And to top the evening off, being ignored when you’re trying to pay a bill and leave simply isn’t good enough. If there’s a delay, or a problem, a simple explanation, possibly an apology, is really all that’s needed. We’d have understood, we had the cash, if someone had explained there was a problem with credit card payments we’d have just paid up with that. But no, there was nothing, and as I said, in the end we left the payment on the table. I hope it was there once someone noticed we were gone.
We are not particularly fussy, honestly. We don’t expect obsequious, fawning service, but we do like a little attention paid to our needs and if that attention had been paid we’d have ordered more to drink, probably ordered more to eat (those cat’s ear noodles sounded intriguing), probably desert as well. Tipped generously and recommended Spice Temple to one and all. But by the end of it we were disheartened and just wanted to go.
This really has gone on a bit, sorry, but I got the feeling from your response that you didn’t really understand what my problem was. I hope you do now.

So easy to simply communicate, isn't it? And sad when wait staff doesn't...

Having spent over 20 years in catering on one form or another, I have a real soap box on service. For instance - when 4 people are serving a bar - spot your next customer before he/she even knows that they are, work the bar.
I usually stand incredulous as I become invisible at a bar and some how become absorbed into the woodwork, or I'm just bloody ignored. It drives me mad.

Whilst skiing, the hotel restaurant was packed every night, mainly with non-residents, and the chef/owner knew where everyone was drinks, food whatever. He was so on the ball it made me ache to get up and start serving tables, because it was so fluid, so dynamic, and that restaurant must have doubled the covers on each table through the night... sat at the bar it was a joy to watch, it was poetry in motion.

So my suggestion to the Owners of Spice Temple, get a bloody good front of house manager, because if the food is as great as DMM says, then you need one, pronto, because if there is one thing that ticks people off,it's crap service, and who tells that to the chef behind closed doors, who is doing his upmost?

Zoomie, I'd have thought it simple but it clearly isn't.
Roo - exactly - it can be done, and well, and so disappointing when it isn't.
S - you, missy, are a stirrer of possums!

Hi DMM -
Well done! You've written a very clear and detailed description of the good, the bad and, sadly, the unnecessarily unpleasant aspects of dining at "Spice Temple".

Hi Roo -
Spot on! What you describe is what every great restaurant has achieved. It's the combination of delicious food and excellent service that makes one want to wax rhapsodic, tell their friends and come back again and again to the restaurant.

Hi Mr. Doyle
I hope you have popped back in to read DMM's generous follow up post.
She has provided you with excellent, detailed feedback. And Roo has given terrific advice as well.

DMM could have written the food was great, the service was atrocious - stay away. But she didn't. She took the time to write a measured review and subsequent response. I hope you and your staff are able to bring the service up to match the quality of the delicious food very soon!
- Lee

Well, that certainly clears up any potential misunderstand I might have had about your experience. I am going to have a discussion with the management team and make sure we get this addressed right away.

I very much appreciate you taking the time to post these comments, and if you'd like to send me an email we could continue the discussion if you wish. My email is dave@quest.com

Bravo, Mr. Doyle! It's hard to get things right at first. It's nice to know you want to try.

Cookie - indeed, it was rather brave of him to come back.
Mr Doyle, I hope you do fix the bit that's wrong, since everything else really is beautifully done.
