What does <3 mean ?

... is it rude? Is it a joke? Is it something I should know?

less than three?

Possibly, but I suspect it's got something to do with boobs - not sure why exactly, just a suspicion.

No clue.
I tried Googling it.
Then I tried Googling it within quotation marks, but still no joy.
I'm with caw - what was the context?

Is it always written?
Is it drawn - like graffiti?
If you turn it sideways, I guess it could be a visual slang for a woman - sort of...

I've seen it on the intertubes, in some English blogs, but buggered if I can find it again. Perhaps if we ignore it, it will just go away.

According to UrbanDictionary.com - a site which has destroyed whatever innocence I may have had left. It's a heart, and can be used in something like:

I <3 New York - I love New York.

It would appeared that it originated amongst young girls, and is not looked upon very highly. I'm with you on the ignoring thing.

UK - of course, that's exactly what it is, a little heart - the cyber equivalent of a smiley face to dot an i.

"It's an emoticon, it means love. You are supposed to write it without a space between the less than symbol and the three. Then when you look at it sideways (rotate your head to the right) it is supposed to look like a heart, but I reckon it looks like an ice cream cone with 2 scoops"

SHITTTTTT i cannot believe that someone got it first! i sent out emails all over the place...a graphic artist friend knew straight away but i was lazy to post back.....AH well we all know now. xS

S - well you see, the Urban Koda knows all sorts of things - things about about bird identification and emoticons - useful chap to know.

I just became very excited because I saw <3 used in a sentence on Twitter and I understood it from context!

So I hurried over here to let you know.

But UK had answered October 14, 2008!
Sigh...

But I did learn a valuable lesson: It's important to repeatedly check the comments. All sorts of pearls of wisdom are just waiting to be gleaned!
