I don't usually give money to strangers on the street ...

... tramps, bums, homeless folk or beggars.
I get asked quite often, something about being a middle-aged woman I guess. But for reasons of personal safety I won't open my bag, and then my purse, on the street and fish around for coins.
Back in the day I used to wear jeans all the time, and kept spare change in my pockets, I did hand over coins from time to time. But not any more.
Until last night.
A disheveled, but lucid, chap wandered up and asked for spare change, “for drugs and booze. I promise not to spend it on food”. Well, even my hardened heart couldn’t resist his honesty. (It did help it was on a very busy, well lit street).

It's makes a nice change from the usual sob story about needing food and all that crap...

I wonder how well he makes out for himself...

Roo - Good. Acutally, if I was a bloke I'd probably give more, having easy access to coins in my pockets-es, but as a girly you just don't feel safe about it (which is so unfair but there you go).
UK - well, he got $5 out of me! Most beggers who actually ask (as most just sit with a box and a little sign in front with their heads down) say things like "I just need $2.20 for my train fair". I only fell for that once, when a new & innocent small-town girl in the big city.

I noticed the ones near the place I work were doing market research a while back. For a couple of weeks, they would change the amount they needed for bus fare each day - I think the winning number was $2.85...

There's a guy in LA who holds up a sign that says "Why lie? I want a beer."
