I have just realised ...

... that the Brown-Mouse House & Garden may be a haven for several sorts of spiders but it has been an age and a half since I've seen a Daddy Longlegs*. I wonder where it is they hide.

* I learned today that the English also call them cellar spiders.

i'm not clicking on that link in case there's a photograph.

The husband thinks i'm mad to shrug at the redbacks ( small, squashable ), and jump on the bed shrieking at the thought of a DLL.

hate 'em.

I've always liked Daddy Longlegs spiders - so harmless and funny/awkward, as if evolution hasn't finished with them yet. Also, reminds me of the cute movie by that name with the adorable Leslie Caron and the incomparable Fred Astaire. It's an oldie but goodie.

Yeah, whatever happened to them?
damn global warming.

H&B - there is a photo but also very interesting info - did you know that DLLs can kill & EAT redbacks??
Zoomie - I love that movie too.
Cookie - I'm crossing my fingers they are all living behind the shower wall - that's where I found 100s when we renovated the bathroom at our old house.

Hang on - we call Crane Flys Daddy Longlegs and I have never heard of a cellar spider, we just call them house spiders - the big legged ones that have a fat blob of a body bouncing in what seems to be thin air. The ones that run towards you as soon as you spot them!

We have little garden spiders that jump, they are brill. I'm happy to let a spider live in my house.

Many DDLs still here and they are good predators of other nasty things.
Long live the Daddy Long Legs.

Roo - what's a crane fly? I
We, too, are big spider fans, regularly rescuing them from the cats. But the are NOT ALLOWED in the bedroom - no exceptions.
ID - I may have to collect some DDLs from my mum's place, and release them here, I miss them.

Morgan - this is one - http://lalaweenworld.blogspot.com/search?q=crane+fly

Let me know what you call them if you have them. They are harmless btw (if you don't have them);o)

Roo, they look like mosquitos - ugg, but Prof Wiki tells me not to worry. A quick Google tells me we only have them in Queensland and the Northern Territory, much further north than the Brown-Mouse House.
Australians (well Queenslanders & Northern Territorians) call them Crane Flies too!
