... because if we say something like "nice Thongs", you think we've seen your scanties and we are actually just saying we like your footwear.

Until the last decade or so, thongs were just sandals (or flip flops) that were held on in some manner between the big toe and second toe.
Thong referring to undies is quite recent.
And thankfully the fad of showing the top of ones thong above ones hip hugger jeans seems to have waned!

Lee, you've made me remember a terrible picture I saw once, comparing 2 ladies, both showing their "thong tops", tee hee.
