Well... it's getting much better. I would move to NY and bring my own coffee machine, it'd be worth it.

Sadly. True. And many Americans will tell you that they "prefer" filtered coffee... which isn't surprising in a land where even the biggest, plushest, ritziest hotels find it baffling when you ask for a latte with breakfast.
The fabulous Goodies had a song about beans "beans, beans, beans, beans, everybody loves beans, hey!" - Damn, now I'll have that wee tune in my head all day.
