... When I was growing up nobody was allergic to peanuts, or you never heard about it anyway. There was always 1 kid at school who was allergic to bloody everything, but the rest of us, nope. There was generally 1 or 2 asthma kids too, but they were always the long distance runners so, in retrospect, I'm suspicious of their need for Ventolin.
Anyway, this was in the paper this morning. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Here's some useless information for you...
It appears people "allergic to peanuts" may not be allergic to "peanuts" at all, but rather something ON the peanuts.
Scientists figured it out by watching wasps at a peanut farm. It seems the wasps ALWAYS avoided a particular patch of peanuts.
When the peanuts were harvested, they were kept apart. The ones the wasps avoided almost universally caused allergic reactions in people, while even the most peanut sensitive could eat the ones the wasps were happy to land on. They haven't exactly figured out what it is yet, but score one point for Mother Nature.
When I was growing up I don't remember people having nearly as many allergies as they do now. Did we just not know it, or are we generally poisoning ourselves and the planet more nowadays and our bodies are reacting accordingly?
I can tell you I had no allergies that I knew of when I was a kid, though I guess my gluten allergy has always been there, and got worse as I got older. Occasionally I'll have an allergic reaction to something, usually in a shampoo or shower gel of some sort.
Of course, living in LA probably doesn't help, does it? I keep thinking I'm going to move to Colorado, but just can't make up my mind...
Mr Bear - NEVER trust a wasp, bee yes, wasp NO.
E - I blame the whole anti-bacterial thing myself, the whole clean everything and then wipe it down with antiseptic. There's nothing wrong with a little dirt and a few germs, it's actually good for you.
You've reminded me, I've an allergy to cheap earrings - no really - my ears go all red and itchy, have done since the holes were first made! Only gold and silver for moi!
Hey hey DMM, I found you via Ilva's blog, and thought I'd drop in and say hi.
There wasn't any kids at school with me that had allergies either, nor did kids have "attention" disorders, they where just little sods that got a clip and detention.
Then again, we never ate anything other the meals my mum cooked, baked etc.
Cheers
Roo, howido - I'll admit I'm of the opinion that most of those ADD kids are just naughty, they just have middle class parents who make excuses. But I'm an old grumpy bum!
Ms Mouse - you are allergic to cheap earings? you had best stick to the gold ruby and diamond ones my luvvy. i have a friend who is allergic to the same thing - something to do with a metal element. she only wears gold and diamonds ... i swear. it's the cure :)
