... a string of comments over on Mr Gatsby's blog reminded me of an old T-shirt I possess. Hell, I still wear it from time to time. Tis a nice black T-shirt that has "Give an Australian the Head Job" (right across the boobular area as it happens).
The shirt hails from 1999 when there was a referendum to see if Australia would be a republic instead of a constitutional monarchy. I wore my heart across my boobs. My home town voted YES but pretty much the rest of Australia voted NO.
Now, most Australians "get" my T-shirt and it doesn't rate a mention, except how old it must be. But tourists, they do a lot of double takes. I think they may be reading it slightly differently.

lololol you are norty!! i love it.
I'm guessing that's why it was such a popular t-shirt!
They didn't vote NO to the Republic. They just voted NO to the plan... somewhat stupidly.
They thought that if Parliament was to elect the President, it would guarantee that the job went to some political hack. They didn't read the fine print, which said two third of the members of Parliament would have to agree, which almost guaranteed that the job didn't go to anyone in or remotely connected to politics.
What people actually wanted was to VOTE for the president, which, paradoxically, would absolutely guarantee that the job went to a political hack.
Me? I think the job should go to someone selected by lottery. You get to be President for four years, opening church fetes, smiling and waving a bit, then you retire on, say, a couple of hundred grand a year (which is way less than former Prime Ministers cost).
Either that, or have the President selected in a Big Brother style reality TV show.
Just so long as it's not someone from TV or a "sport star" I wouldn't care.
Yes, I can see how the t-shirt could be misread. Does make you edgy, though.
Oh yeah, that's me alright, "edgy" :)
