... help me out here. What exactly is a "town car"?

Hmmm. What context was it used in?

I think it's a big old people's type car. Like a Buick or an Oldsmobile maybe ... they are big old cars. But a town car would probably be in tip-top condition with a glossy paint job, all sparkly-like.

A town car would not be a jeep or a mini. I'm thinking it would be a poser type car.

It's a Lincoln, and only a Lincoln.

I think Pres Kennedy was in a town car when he was shot ( ? )

It's big, black, boxy, and is seen on shows like "The West End" presumably.

I wish our pollies were so recognisable....

yup. lincoln, though sometimes the crown victoria (which i also think is a ford and is similarly boxy) gets called a town car too.
