We'd moved the first crop of taddies to a larger pot, with more sun you see. Leaving the first pot empty.<br /><a href="http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/season/nsw/sydney.shtml">And then it rained</a> and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rained and rain, and that small pot filled up with beautiful, clean rain water.<br />Frogs it appears, like nature, hate a vacuum and so we are the proud custodians of two tadpole nurseries.<br />Anyway, I like to check in on the little swimmers, so I did, only to find a fully-metamorphosized version peeking up at me.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKcZmZ7INcI7c4N0zzMlXcjDbzBajc_T4xLRTSs5sx2KgSmB1HlgHR8QKnfyQGOVtxfF0nDr0uZv5UNg9O88-f7vE7qJAQw4Lyq8-YRnbkCrt4SSoOAjP5FDVhD9C_tjLd7xyDQ/s1600/1.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKcZmZ7INcI7c4N0zzMlXcjDbzBajc_T4xLRTSs5sx2KgSmB1HlgHR8QKnfyQGOVtxfF0nDr0uZv5UNg9O88-f7vE7qJAQw4Lyq8-YRnbkCrt4SSoOAjP5FDVhD9C_tjLd7xyDQ/s400/1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720740910263333474" border="0" /></a>Cheeky begger. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4EGiJPUMfawfJ4EoPTxpGwP6f1lkMwDmXrTFH7CGmYFz5LV4pcLPJICdSOdBUl-wT4pSf91Og1uDpuak5GJvNloBRI8wcfvL4ab2Qjehb2_9seBwRgUFnHH08qhgYxHvFsq-T_g/s1600/2.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 317px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4EGiJPUMfawfJ4EoPTxpGwP6f1lkMwDmXrTFH7CGmYFz5LV4pcLPJICdSOdBUl-wT4pSf91Og1uDpuak5GJvNloBRI8wcfvL4ab2Qjehb2_9seBwRgUFnHH08qhgYxHvFsq-T_g/s400/2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720740904407306994" border="0" /></a>I have a horrible feeling he wasn't visiting but snacking on his little brothers and sisters (<span style="font-size:78%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">or, perish the thought, children!</span></span>).<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLfVpfoj1TkoA5DnuWscMzh6Ol_qohDv0udbMogDt7qqK-wpH8JVPpKKdaXN1HouiUVONvfS-5PPouDnV-zUi_TDmAypQYrgeD-l6rTqjn2eHEG4wGBHCSkx5szWHqgqK0lQF0fg/s1600/7.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 340px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLfVpfoj1TkoA5DnuWscMzh6Ol_qohDv0udbMogDt7qqK-wpH8JVPpKKdaXN1HouiUVONvfS-5PPouDnV-zUi_TDmAypQYrgeD-l6rTqjn2eHEG4wGBHCSkx5szWHqgqK0lQF0fg/s400/7.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720740915987738834" border="0" /></a>Still, I finally had a chance to photograph the bugger and confirm, for myself, our back yard frogs are indeed <a href="http://www.frogsaustralia.net.au/frogs/display.cfm?frog_id=40">Striped Marsh Frogs</a>. Obsessively looking up plants and wondering if I'd order some of those <a href="http://www.sprouthome.com/search/?product_search=terrarium&search=Go">nice vessels</a>. And deciding, in a moment of frugal sanity, not to. I figured I could make one myself.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUc1-E50oSmnKt2mopRCoUN4Yw1nux2B-Q_p9MvTNA0scl11gOmcvhbWMAgdwn_-kJgEiyi1hXQLW4YPGG9cAVP8jvxRyAFeRoCTQAeIU4_mSF9jKUzt5Oz4t8CZwnneNQTMx7pw/s1600/moss7.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 301px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUc1-E50oSmnKt2mopRCoUN4Yw1nux2B-Q_p9MvTNA0scl11gOmcvhbWMAgdwn_-kJgEiyi1hXQLW4YPGG9cAVP8jvxRyAFeRoCTQAeIU4_mSF9jKUzt5Oz4t8CZwnneNQTMx7pw/s400/moss7.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713337424102333234" border="0" /></a>Now, the only real-life experience I've had with a terrarium (<span style="font-size:78%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">that I remember</span></span>) was one we had in Canberra, with an open face. I came home one day to find Small, I'm pretty sure it was Small, had pulled out all the plants, scattered them around the house and then dug out all the dirt for good measure. So, clearly, an open terrarium was the only option.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghr2clLs-WjNjG2-vhyphenhyphenfFTmDjBtR4jLY5kNxJ3O8tsvEMMC-huEAvcjn23SSm5F8Xgrgx_HkD6N3C9f_lesJr630LcFfIV7A5v8QtuE-fbh3viKnUftYkzwmmTGBjbEEqhlpMafA/s1600/moss6.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 384px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghr2clLs-WjNjG2-vhyphenhyphenfFTmDjBtR4jLY5kNxJ3O8tsvEMMC-huEAvcjn23SSm5F8Xgrgx_HkD6N3C9f_lesJr630LcFfIV7A5v8QtuE-fbh3viKnUftYkzwmmTGBjbEEqhlpMafA/s400/moss6.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713337417511069394" border="0" /></a>Dirt, charcoal and stones were obtained from a local plant emporium.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTJ6A7-jbaKWVDiwC9cpZip_hguMqCiG6zocTHD3aL8z1U9Ib2u7yhSl8mcKUwDmz2Hm3SaB2mKvJqv6Pgfef6zU9pZizt59FDKNOoRkPlqDKdC2cKhs4r25M39YjE79EUqldoA/s1600/moss4.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTJ6A7-jbaKWVDiwC9cpZip_hguMqCiG6zocTHD3aL8z1U9Ib2u7yhSl8mcKUwDmz2Hm3SaB2mKvJqv6Pgfef6zU9pZizt59FDKNOoRkPlqDKdC2cKhs4r25M39YjE79EUqldoA/s400/moss4.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713337130656755490" border="0" /></a>Moss was sourced "locally", as was a small piece of native violet runner. I felt a lump, quite firm and no corresponding one on the other side.<br />I mentioned this to Mr Brown who agreed a little visit to the vet was in order.<br />Just to be sure.<br />And dial up the panic, the worry, the "<span style="font-style: italic;">what ifs</span>" the tears and the rest of it. I'm nothing if not a Drama Mouse.<br />Mr Brown, cool as a cucumber, was all, "<span style="font-style: italic;">it's just a fatty lump</span>". I think she was old, I suspect she is no more. This makes me sad.<br /><a href="http://dancingmorganmouse.blogspot.com/search/label/Possum%20Chronicles">We don't seem to have possums in the garden anymore</a>. There's no evidence of visits. No nibbled parsley, no poo, no nibbled camellias, no chewed maple tree. This also makes me sad.<br />We don't see possums, we still hear them, from time to time, but until just the other night not a poss has been spotted. Mr Brown saw one this week, we rushed out to offer it some cherry tomatoes but it was gone before we got there and the tomatoes were still in the bowl in the morning. Again, this saddens me.<br />At the xmas street party at the end of the year I mentioned the lack of possums and how this saddened me and one of the other-side-of-the-street neighbours confessed to capturing and releasing them some distance away. This made me sad AND angry. It's illegal for a start and probable death for the possum. Apparently it was "<span style="font-style: italic;">necessary</span>" because they were getting into her roof. This can be fixed, we actively encouraged possums and they never got into the roof. Once one got into the chimney, was evicted and fox wire put in place to stop it coming back. Fixed and Poss lived.<br />This is why I'm not a particularly neighbourly person.<br /><a href="http://whyology.blogspot.com/2012/01/in-urban-centres-of-south-east.html">And it is why reading this made me a little happier</a>.Ms Brown Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06128283343279442537noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19409947.post-18696820079013230722012-01-03T18:21:00.004+11:002012-01-05T17:28:36.995+11:00Meet Loudy McNoisypants ........ A cicada, he camped in our lemon tree last night, directly outside the open back door.<br />The noise was incredible. When I stepped directly into the sound wave my ears hurt.<br />So, I found him, introduced myself and entered relocation negotiations. That is I picked him up and moved him onto the Maple tree at the bottom of the garden.<br />He even sang a little while sitting on my hand, my whole arm thrummed with the sound. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix6XJydzXRpY_anK96oopXGdiR2IMieqbHjmmw8QGa3uCJlw8q-ejQC1aDVgsz48VZx2Dmb9jmhmxzyakyL5jby_B4-xjkEXT86MbPhOzj0QGsKUQR2Cq-69mQIGbx2RbuvSVxGw/s1600/cic.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 389px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix6XJydzXRpY_anK96oopXGdiR2IMieqbHjmmw8QGa3uCJlw8q-ejQC1aDVgsz48VZx2Dmb9jmhmxzyakyL5jby_B4-xjkEXT86MbPhOzj0QGsKUQR2Cq-69mQIGbx2RbuvSVxGw/s400/cic.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693305274302899970" border="0" /></a>In other news I was lucky enough to see one of last year's tadpoles emerge, a fully formed wee <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">froglet</span> last evening. Then we stuffed as many oranges we could fit up it's bum and held the poor thing shut with spikes & string (<a href="http://urbanfoodmarket.rtrk.com.au/?scid=87688&kw=5219742&pub_cr_id=15022444900"><span style="font-size:78%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">at least it had a good life beforehand</span></span></a>).<br />The stuffing in the pumpkin was an excellent idea, not well executed. Oh well, we live and learn. Pumpkin tasted pretty good I must say.<br />The spuds, simply cooked beneath the goose, it's drippings bathing the spuds beautifully. Then, blasted with crisping heat while the poor goose rested from it's ordeal.<br />That Trifle, wonderful, and all those berries, nom, nommity, nom, nom, nom.<br />Wine, a rare treat of sparkling black Shiraz from <a href="http://www.rockfordwines.com.au/">Rockford</a> and an elderly (<span style="font-size:78%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">in a good way</span></span>) Hunter Valley Shiraz from <a href="http://saddlerscreek.com/cellar2u/">Saddler's Creek</a>.<br />And the next day Mum presented me with a jar labeled "<span style="font-style: italic;">Goose Grease</span>". Furballs.<br />For instance, just the other weekend I washed the Girls' pod cover. Furball hackings ALL over it last night. I've stepped on them in the kitchen, the lounge and the bedroom. This is not fun.<br />Time for action.<br />So, today, my mental health catch up with stuff day, I gathered up the ripper brush and the soft brush and got to work.<br />Lucky for me the Girls like brushing, they think it's a great lark and come running when you call "<span style="font-style: italic;">brushings</span>". It does get them a little wild and feisty, and it's really, really hard to do Pingu when Tigger won't get out of the way.<br />But still, I think I got the job done. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWtnP3fKXH8wIeaX0209TKpmfY7dDeQyDEDgFUJnZmQi-2HVfs054PDkzSVR9GugDp_8Q91AU1JDFLkiepzNc8NNeq0twSPn25rgQvsrz0x7W3ghFz-H8eTPgws6UYvyrrRNfLhw/s1600/brushings.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 399px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWtnP3fKXH8wIeaX0209TKpmfY7dDeQyDEDgFUJnZmQi-2HVfs054PDkzSVR9GugDp_8Q91AU1JDFLkiepzNc8NNeq0twSPn25rgQvsrz0x7W3ghFz-H8eTPgws6UYvyrrRNfLhw/s400/brushings.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669862190800725138" border="0" /></a>That's Tigger's contribution on the right, less than a teaspoonful.<br /><br />The brushing got me all nostalgic for my girlhood. A certain weekend every spring, I can't remember how we selected which one, the pony girls would all gather at the lucerne flats with bags of brushes and out beloved ponies. We would rip and brush those beasts from shaggy-Winter coat to glossy, smooth Spring coat in an afternoon. The end of which we'd all, girls and ponies, be ankle deep in fluff.Ms Brown Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06128283343279442537noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19409947.post-78763739003069466532011-10-22T14:55:00.004+11:002011-10-22T15:08:58.475+11:00So, last Sunday ....... we went out and bought ourselves a nice anniversary present.<br />And, because it was our anniversary, the shop, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">DJs</span>, gave us 20% off! * How could we refuse? We will, no doubt, eat several different kinds of oysters, some Kosciusko Pearl Trout Roe on Potato Blinis with Wasabi & Crème Fraiche and follow that with the Snapper Pie with Smoked Tomato & Mashed Potato.
